Fissidens pusillus Petty Pocket-moss

(Wilson) Milde

A minute, dioicous or autoicous Pocket-moss with bordered leaves, which grows on rock, often in wet places. The acute leaf tip with straight-sides is often used as a distinguishing character but this character can be variable. It is similar to Fissidens gracilifolius but that species has distinctly elongated leaves near the base of the seta. It has a scattered distribution in Britain, most common in the west, and it is fairly widespread in south Wales. It is occasional in West Galmorgan and probably under recorded. Sporophyte capsules are usually abundant from autumn through to spring.
