Entosthodon muhlenbergii Muhlenberg's Cord-moss

(Turner) Fife

A small, autoicous, acrocarpous moss which grows on bare, calcareous soils in rock crevices in regions particularly where there are outcrops of Carboniferous Limestone. It is also found on calcareous boulders and ledges and on open banks on calcareous soils (including chalk). It is an uncommon calcicole moss with a restricted distribution in Britain which includes a few sites in Wales such as West Glamorgan where it is very local on the limestone of south Gower coast. Sporophyte capsules are common in spring and summer.
