(Hedw.) Muell.Hal.
A small, Funaria-like acrocarpous moss which grows scattered or in loose turfs in arable fields, cereal stubble and on limestone rocks. It is similar to Physcomitrium pyriforme which sometimes grows in similar places but the capsule has an oblique, asymmetrical calyptra. It has a southern distribution in Britain where it is largely confined to arable land. In West Glamorgan it has only been found in Gower. It is autoicous and sporophyte capsules are common from spring to autumn.
The closely related Mediterranean-Atlantic species, Entosthodon mouretii, discovered new to Britain by Sam Bosanquet in Pembrokeshire, differs from Entosthodon fascicularis in its excurrent leaf nerve. At present, the exact status of this very rare moss in West Glamorgan is unknown.
