A very common, dioicous, acrocarpous moss with narrow, upper leaves that are noticeably longer than the lower ones. It is largely a lowland species which grows on a wide range of substrates which include soil and rock, in woodlands, on tarmac, pavements, waste places and wood and it is a frequent member of the riparian bryophyte flora in the flood zone. It is distributed throughout Britain except for higher ground in the north. It is very common in West Glamorgan. Sporophyte capsules are rare.
