Didymodon fallax Fallacious Beard-moss

(Hedw.) R.H.Zander

A common, dioicous, acrocarpous moss which forms cushions or loose tufts with distantly spaced leaves that are usually recurved when moist and twisted when dry. It is a species of base-rich soils particularly along tracks and pathes. It is rarely found on rock. It is widespread throughout Britain, thinning out in its distribution and abundance in the north. It is common in West Glamorgan particularly along the coast but also in the uplands along forest roads that have been dressed with calcareous gravel. Sporophyte capsules are occasional.
