Dicranum fuscescens Dusky Fork-moss

Sm.

An Arctic-montane, acrocapous moss with a distinct western and northern distribution in Britain. It grows on hard substrates such as the bases of trees as well as in exposed sites on boulders and crags. It forms dense cushions or large patches and is usually quite robust but it is quite variable and easily confused with Dicranum scoparium. It is locally frequent in Wales but is rare or absent from the south and southwest. It is very rare in West Glamorgan with records only from Craig y Llyn. Sporophyte capsules are not uncommon on this dioicous species, particularly in the north and west of Britain.
