Dicranella staphylina Field Forklet-moss

H.Whitehouse

A small dioicous acrocarpous moss which forms clumps of very short (c. 5mm high), crowded stems. It is common in stubble fields and on other disturbed soils, particularly where they are acidic. The short, translucent, narrowly-triangular, pointed leaves have straight sides and spread out from the stem and those at the top of the stem are usually larger than those below. It is largely a lowland species  which is most common in southern Britain, particularly where arable farming is common. It is locally frequent in Western Glamorgan. Most plants are female and sporophyte capsules are unknown in Britain.
