(L.) Dumort.
A large, dark-green thallose liverwort that usually form mats in wet places. The thallus has a pleasant aromatic smell and its shiny, upper, surface is covered with a network of lines forming a geometric pattern and with conspicuous air pores. It prefers slightly base-rich habitats and is usuallly common in shaded places on the banks of rivers and streams and on rocks near waterfalls. It can form extensive colonies on shaded, vertical rock faces that are dripping with water. It is very shaded-tolerant. It is common in its preferred habitats throughout Britain and it is widespread and frequent in West Glamorgan. It is dioicous and sporophyte capsules are occasional.
