(Ehrh. ex Hoffm.) Dumort.
A pale green, translucent, leafy liverwort with bilobed underleaves that have lateral teeth. Typically, it grows among sedges and rushes in fens, flushes or at the sides of upland streams commonly with other bryophytes such as Bryum pseudotriquetrum, Philonotis fontana, Sarmentypnum exxannulatum and Crotoneuron filicinum. It also grows on decaying logs. It is very similar to Chiloscyphus polyanthos but less common than that species and can only be reliably separated from it after examination of the perianth lobes on female plants, which are toothed. It has a scattered distribution in Britain but is most common in the south west, including Wales. It is occasional in West Glamorgan where it may be under recorded. It is autoicous and sporophyte capsules are frequent.
