Campylium stellatum Yellow Starry Feather-moss

(Hedw.) Lange & C.E.O.Jensen

A dioicous, pleurocarpous moss of medium size which occurs in base-rich mires, flushes and dune slacks. It is similar to Campylium protensum andis often confused with it, but the leaf morphology is subtly different and the shorter, less drawn-out leaf tip is channellled or tubular in form, which is a good field character. Like a lot of plants that grow in base-flushed wetland habitats it has declined significantly over the decades and its distribution map in the Atlas of British & Irish Bryophytes features a significant number of pre-1950 records. It is widespread in Wales and it has a scattered distribution in dune slacks and flushed marshy grassland in West Glamorgan. Sporophyte capsules are rare.
