Bryum subapiculatum Lesser Potato Bryum

Hampe

A small, lowland, dioicous Bryum with spherical, red tubers, which is found on non-calcareous sandy or finely-gravelled soils where there is some bare ground, e.g. on banks, the edges of paths and along forest roads and tracks. It is not uncommon and it is found throughout Britain. Like all the small Bryum species it is almost certainly under recorded and, accordingly, there are few records of it in West Glamorgan. It produces sporophyte capsules occasionally.
