Archidium alternifolium Clay Earth-moss

(Hedw.) Schimp.

A distinctive, monoicous, acrocarpous moss of moist, non-calcareous habitats, particularly tracks and other bare places that are well-trodden. It can sometimes occur in huge amounts associated with other pioneer species such as Solenostoma gracillimum and Scapania irrigua. It is widely distributed in these habitats in West Glamorgan. Sporophyte capsules are occasional from spring to autumn.
