Viola reichenbachiana Early Dog-violet

Fioled y Coed

Jord. ex Boreau

A perennial violet with blue-mauve flowers which grows in woodland and hedges, particularly on basic soils. It is similar to but less common than Common Dog-violet and the spur is darker than the petals. It is  largely absent from northern Britain and much of central Wales. In West Glamorgan it is most common in the limestone woodlands of south Gower where it is more frequent than Common Dog-violet (Viola riviniana). There are scatterted records elsewhere but upland records from the South Wales Coalfield in Neath Port Talbot may be errors.
