Fontinalis squamosa Alpine Water-moss

Hedw.

Similar to Fontinalis antipyretica but much more restricted in its habitat range and preferring rapidly flowing, acidic rivers and streams. It is also smaller and its leaves are flatter, rounded on the back and not keeled. It has a more western distribution in Britain than Fontinalis antipyretica and is widspread and locally common in the western half of Wales. It is occasional in West Glamorgan but freqently encountered in the River Afan, particularly between Pont rhyd y Fen and Cymmer and in the River Neath between Aberdulais and Glynneath. It is dioicous and sporophyte capsules are occasional.
