L.
A two-needled pine that is native to the Mediterranean and southwest Asia and sometimes planted in parks and gardens and along roads on retail and industrial parks. The broad flattish crown is quite distinct as are the large female cones which are broadly oval and sometimes almost spherical. Could be confused with Maritime Pine (Pinus pinaster) which has orange-brown female cones that are narrowly cylyndrical in shape. The seeds of Stone Pine have a very short wing and are edible. Not commonly planted in West Glamorgan but often missed and perhaps under recorded.
