Winter Heliotrope is a native of North Africa which was first recorded wild in Britain in 1835. It forms large, dense, clonal colonies in roadside veges, with rounded (suborbicular) leaves. The purple-tinged, white, fragrant flowers appear in early winter, hence its common name. All plants in Britain are males and rely entirely on clonal, vegetative reproduction. Once established, colonies pesist for a long time. It is largely a lowland species in West Glamorgan.
