Larix kaempferi Japanese Larch

Llarwydd Japan

(Lindl.) Carrière

Larix kaempferi, Japanese Larch, is native to a small region on Honshu Island in Japan, but it has been widely cutivated for timber in Britain. It is also one of the parents of the hybrid Larix X marschlinsii (Hybrid Larch) which is probably a more important timber tree in West Glamorgan. Both have become susceptible to Ramorum disease (caused by Phytophthora ramorum) which has led to their removal. Japanese Larch and Hybrid Larch are very similar and it is exteremely difficult to distinguish between them in the field. Records of both in West Glamorgan cannot be separated reliably - see account for Larix X marschlinsii.
