Epipactis phyllanthes Green-flowered Helleborine

Caldrist Melynwyrdd

G.E.Sm.

Green-flowered Helleborine, is an orchid of woods and dunes in Britain where it has a scattered and local distribution and is very variable. The common name is a bit misleading since some populations have very pale flowers, such as those that occur on dunes in south Wales (sometimes referred to as var. cambrensis). It is exteremely rare in West Glamorgan, with records from Oxwich Dunes and a more recent record from the towpath of the Tennant Canal near Jersey Marine where it was found by Hilary Hipkin. Its occurrence at sites where it has been recorded previously is very unpredictable.
