Eleocharis multicaulis Many-stalked Spike-rush

Clwpfrwynen Galafog

(Sm.) Desv.

A densly-tufted, shortly-creeping spike-rush which grows in acidic soils on wet heathland, bogs, flushes and dune slacks. The clustered stems are usually quite obvious and the spikelets have 10 or more florets which have 3 stigmas; Eleocharis palustris and Eleocharis uniglumis have florets with 2 stigmas. It is found throughout much of western and northern Britain, particularly in the uplands and is widespread in Wales. It is locally frequent in West Glamorgan with populations on the Gower Commons and in the uplands of the South Wales Coalfield in Neath Port Talbot. It has declined in other parts of the county largely as a result of habitat loss.
