Crocus x luteus Yellow Crocus (C. angustifolius x flavus)

Lam.

A yellow-flowered crocus that appears in spring which is commonly cultivated in gardens, urban flower beds and parks. It rarely spreads from cultivation but bulbs 'naturalised' in suitable places can give rise to populations that persist for several or many years. Identifying yellow-flowered crocuses is complicated by the fact that both Crocus flavus and Crocus x lutea (which is the hybrid between Crocus flavus and Crocus angustifolius) are cultivated under the name Yellow Crocus and both are very similar. Furthermore, Crocus identification keys are somewhat ambiguous and unhelpful in separating them. Most, if not all yellow cocuses recorded in West Glamorgan are likely to be Crocus x luteus.
