A species of soft calcareous rocks and lime mortar, frequently in association with cyanolichens. The thallus is comprised of overlapping inflated squamules, though these can be reduced by mollusc grazing. Differentiated from the closely related Thalloidima sedifolium by the 3-septate, not 1-septate, spores and black apothecia.
Site details: At Margam landfill, it grows on a calcareous slag rock embedded in slag spoil, direct associates including Placynthium nigrum and Protoblastenia rupestris. At Newton Cliff it on Carboniferous limestone outcrops, in narrow fissures which hold fine particulate matter and moisture.
Listed under Toninia aromatica by Alan Orange in Flora of Glamorgan (Wade et al, 1994).
