Carex buchananii Silver-spiked Sedge

Hesgen Seland Newydd

Berggr.

This distinctive sedge occurs as a modern garden escape in the UK and is a native of New Zealand. Plants form erect tufts of strikingly red foliage, with the silvery inflorescences hidden amongst the densely packed leaves and bracts. A large, well-established, naturalised population was found in June 2024 by BS on seasonally flooded brownfield land west of the Swansea University Bay Campus. Currently, this is the only site where it has been recorded in West Glamorgan.
