Carex arenaria Sand Sedge

Hesg y Tywod

Linnaeus

A pioneer species of open semi-fixed sand dune habitats and dune slacks. Although it is predominantly coastal in its distribution in West Glamorgan it has also been recorded inland on coal tips. However, it is an ubiquitous component the county's sandune habitats, especially in the mobile sand of semi-fixed areas. It produces far-creeping rhizomes which give rise to single stemmed shoots at (approximately) every fourth node. Consequently, plants often appear to be growing in lines.
