Anthemis austriaca Austrian Chamomile

Jacq.

Austrian Chamomile is an annual weed which is native to east and south-east Europe. It is frequently sown with wildflower mixtures and wild, naturalised population are now widespread as a result of this. It is easily mistaken for Corn Chamomile (Anthemis arvensis) which is a much rarer species and it differs from it in its regularly and closely lobed leaflets which give it a very neat appearance. But examination of the achenes, which unlike those of Corn Chamomile are compresssed, is required to ensure a safe identification. Austrian Chamomile is a weed of ruderal sites and bare ground in West Glamorgan with few records at present, but may become more common in future.
