A white flowered shrub or small tree in the Rose family (Rosaceae) that flowers in spring which can grow up to 10m high. Although it is sometimes known as Juneberry it has a number of other common names including Snowy Mespilus and Apple Serviceberry. It produces edible, purple-black berries in summer which are sweet and juicy and used to make jams and jellies. It is native to North America but occurs naturalised occasionally, in Britain. The berries are eaten by frugiverous birds which probably aid it its dispersal and naturalisation. There are scattered records of it in West Glamorgan.
