Agrostis stolonifera Creeping Bent

Maeswellt Gwyn y Coed

L.

Agrostis stolonifera  is a very common, widespread and abundant perennial grass in the British Flora. It is extremely variable and exists in a number of genetically distinct ecotypes and may be found in a number of different habitats. Its main preference is for wet habitats such as wet grasslands, wetlands, seasonally flooded tracks and grassy places in the upper salt marsh where a distinct, salt-tolerant form is found. But it is also found in drier, disturbed, ruderal habitats. It usually has a creeping habit, with stoniferous shoots that give rise to ascending flowering stems. The leaf has a long ligule (like Agrostis canina) but the spikelets are not conspicuously awned.
