Körb.
An unobtrusive species known from a wide range of basic substrates including limestone, slag, asbestos-cement and old mortar, most frequent in lowland areas. The apothecia discs are characteristically grey pruinose, becoming red-brown when wet. Under the microscope the asci are distinctive, holding up to 200 spores. The thallus is immersed, appearing as an inconspicuous greyish crust. Lichen associates recorded on slag at Margam Burrows included Candelariella aurella, Scytinium gelatinosum, S. teretiusculum, Peltigera didactyla, Physcia tenella and Placynthium nigrum. Associate bryophytes noted were Orthotrichum anomalum, Bryoerythrophyllum recurvirostrum, Didymodon vinealis and Schistidium crassipilum.
