Cladonia furcata subsp. furcata - © Barry Stewart
(Huds.) Schrad.
One of the more common 'false reindeermosses' found in habitats including less acid heaths, dunes, nutrient deficient grasslands, slag and coal spoil. Frequently grows with the similar, but more richly branched C. rangiformis. The cortex of furcata is more uniform than that of rangiformis, which typically has a stronger mosaic pattern of grey-green patches. Can form large cushions up to 8cm in height, the podetial being dark grey-green to olive-brownish ± dichotomously branched, the apices markedly pointed. Apothecia are brown, on short lateral branches towards the apices. Thallus C–, K± yellow, KC–, Pd+ red, UV–.
