Baeomyces rufus - © Charles Hipkin
(Huds.) Rebent.
A colonist of disturbed acid soils on earth banks, paths and shaded siliceous rocks in humid or damp locations. It has a grey-green thallus which become covered with stalked apothecia, resembling tiny toadstools. When dry, the apothecia are brown but they become more pink when wet. It is virtually unmistakable when it is fruiting but some colonies are sterile. It is frequent in the uplands of West Glamorgan but is largely absent at lower elevations, where suitable habitat is limited.
