(Bull.) Gillet
A common grey-capped Tricholoma which is similar to Yellowing Knight (Tricholoma scalpturatum) and in some guides it is considered to be a form of it (e.g. Collins Complete Guide to British Mushrooms & Toadstools - Paul Sterry and BarryHughes, 2009). More recent guides (e.g. Mushrooms and Toadstools of Britain & Europe Vol. 2 - Geoffrey Kibby, 2020) treat them as separate species. One of its key features is the cobweb like veil which covers the gills in young fruiting bodies (see photo), but this soon disappears without trace after as the caps expand and mature. Young fruiting bodies may be dark grey-brown but the caps of mature specimens are usually pale grey with darker grey scales. It grows at the edges of all types of woodland and scrub in leaf litter or in grassy places and is common in West Glamorgan.
