Russula sanguinaria Bloody Brittlegill

(Schumach.) Rauschert

A common species which occurs with pines, particularly in parks and on industrial estates. Quite distinctive, but cap colour variable from scarlet to pinkish red and often pale or even whitish. The stipe is usually flushed with pink and gradually develops yellow stains with age (see photo). The flesh has a very acrid taste.
