Tortula muralis Wall Screw-moss

Hedw.

A small, autoicous acrrocarpous moss which grows in patches or low cushions on walls, concrete, roof tiles, and other stone structures. The long hair points on the leaves, which give the colonies a hoary appearance and the usually abundant capsules on comparatively long stalks, make it fairly conspicuous. It is a very common moss which is almost ubiquitous in Britain but for the highlands of Scotland. In the BBS field guide (Mosses and Liverworts of Britain and Ireland) it is described as one of the first (and commonest) mosses that beginners will find. It is a common and widespread species in the lowlands of West Glamorgan. Sporophyte capsules are abundant throughout most of the year.
