(Schimp.) Aangstr.
A dioicous bog-moss which grows in base-rich flushes and minerally-enriched soaks, usually among rushes and sedges. Plants usually have a ginger colouration which contrats with the prominent green terminal bud which stands proud of the capitulum. Branches usually have slightly recurved leaves which are not as recurved as those of Sphagnum squarrosum. It is a Boreal-arctic montane species which has a western and northern distribution in Britain, including Wales. It is not common in south Wales and in West Glamorgan the only records are from flushed areas on Fairwood Common and Crymlyn Fen. Sporophyte capsules are rare.
