Barry Stewart

Barry Stewart, grew up in Sunderland and worked for the Wildflowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT) before moving to Wales in 1989, where he helped setup the WWT centre at Llanelli in Carmarthenshire. He then went to Swansea University as a mature student and graduated in Environmental Biology in 1997. Since then, he has acquired more than 25 years professional experience as consultant ecologist, specialising in birds, invertebrates, plants and habitats.

With respect to the development of his botanical knowledge, it is perhaps no coincidence that Charles Hipkin was one of his lecturers at Swansea and it was evident, even at this stage, that both shared enthusiasm for recording natural history outside of their professional and academic pathways. Barry has held the post of West Glamorgan County Recorder for the Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland for over a decade and previously filled the role of Regional Recorder for Glamorgan for the British Bryological Society. In 2019 Barry and his wife Sandra set up Celtic Wildflowers Ltd, growing native wildflowers to support nature conservation projects.
