(E. Forst) Syme
A yellow-flowered, annual or perennial violet that occurs on coastal dunes. While it has been known widely for a long time as Viola tricolor ssp. curtisii, its true taxonomic status has been called into question in recent years. Michael Porter and Michael Foley (Violas of Britain and Ireland, BSBI Handbook No. 17, 2017) advise that plants from most of the coastal dune systems in Britain are actually Viola tricolor ssp. tricolor. Flower colour is extremely variable in the Viola tricolor complex although, interestingly, all the coastal populations of Viola tricolor (whatever subspecies they are) in West Glamorgan are yellow. It has an almost exclusively coastal distribution in Britain, more commonly along the west coast. It is locally frequent on coastal dunes in West Glamorgan with large populations in the dune systems of Neath Port Talbot (e.g. Crymlyn Burrows).
