Viola hirta Hairy Violet

Crynllys Blewog

Linnaeus

A perennial violet with hairy leaves and stems and pale blue, scentless flowers. It is a plant of calcareous grasslands, cliffs and coastal sand dunes as well as woodland edge habitats and hedgebanks. It is most common in southern England and has declined in much of its former range. In Wales it is largely confined to calcareous habitats on the south and north coasts. In West Glamorgan it is mostly confined to south Gower where it is occasional in calcareous grasslands on the limestone cliffs and occasionally in sand dunes there and in dune habitats near Morfa and the Kenfig River.
