Taxodium distichum Swamp Cypress

(Linnaeus) Rich.

Native to the swamp forests of southeastern USA. It was introduced to Britain sometime in the 17th century where it is seen occasionally in parks and arboreta. Although it tolerates and grows well in waterlogged soils, as its name and native ecology suggests, it thrives in dry, well-drained soils in cultivation. Like Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides), to which it is closely related, it is deciduous. It is rare in West Glamorgan.
