L.
A very popular and much grown garden perennial, often grown in parks and urban flower beds. It is roughly hairy with entire or with rather remotely-toothed leaves and an instantly recognisable composite inflorecence which has bright yellow ray florets and a dark, purple-brown cone of tightly packed disc florets (the 'black eye'). It is native to North America but it sometimes occurs as an alien escape or throw-out and may persist in waste places dfor a few years.
