Polypodium interjectum Intermediate Polypody

Llawredynen Ganolig

Shivas

Intermediate Polypody is found in a wide range of habitats in Britain including sand dunes, walls and as an epiphyte on trees. However, it prefers base-rich substrates much more than Common Polypody (Polypodium vulgare) which it resembles (see description of Polypodium vulgare sens.lat. for some distinguishing features). The sporangia of Intermediate Polypody have an annulus with usually 7-9  thickened cells (see photo). The fronds have a distinctive ovate shape (widest in the middle), but not as broad as those of Southern Polypody (Polypodium cambricum). It is a common species in West Glamorgan and often abundant on sand dunes.
