Misopates orontium Weasel's-snout

Y Trwyn-y-Llo Lleiaf

(L.) Raf.

Weasel's-snout, also known as Lesser Snapdragon, is an uncommon annual weed of cultivated ground such as gardens and allotments, waste places, pavenments and other bare open places. The small, pink snapdragon-like flowers, which appear in July, have a small pouch rather than a spur. One of its most conspicuous features are the sepals which have long, unequal teeth that overtop the flowers. It has declined greatly in Britain over the last 100 years. It has a marked southern distribution in Britain but it is quite scarce in Wales where most of its sites are coastal. However, there is some evidence that it is making a recovery particularly in the west Wales. It is rare in, and absent from, much of Glamorgan but there are a few recent records of it from West Glamorgan. It does less well in cold winters and wet summers when seed production and germination, which are essential for population survival, is compromised.
