Moench
Fagopyrum esculentum, Buckwheat, is annual member of the knotweed family (Polygonacea) which is native to central and eastern Asia where it has been grown as a crop for centuries. It is still grown today in parts of eastern Europe. It was an important crop in parts of Britain and Ireland from the 17th to the 19th Century, but today it is more important as a source of bird seed and it has been grown widely to provide seed for game birds. It is occasionally sown into arable fields in Gower to provide seed for winter flocks birds that forage in arable fields.
