A dwarf, evergreen, ericaceous shrub which grows on well-drained heathy, acidic soils in the west and north of Britain, mostly on higher ground. It is an arctic-montane species which is frequent in the uplands and mountains of mid and north Wales. It is widespread on higher ground in Dyfed and Powys but scarce and largely absent from Glamorgan and much of south Wales where it is confined to the northern uplands. It is very rare in Glamorgan but occurs in small amounts on the north facing cliffs of Craig y Llyn.
