(Linnaeus) Roemer & Schultes
A common, wisdely distributed spike-rush found throughout Britain and Ireland. It is a perennial with long-creeping rhizomes which grows in very wet places at the edges of pools, ponds. lakes, marshes, in dune slacks and in other wet places, often forming large clonal colonies. It tends not to grow in very acidic habitats, but prefers some degree of base-richness, often in places with some degree of nutrient enrichment. The terminal spikes are relatively large compared to those of other spike-rushes and the two, lower sterile glumes do not completely surround the base of the spikelet. Florets have 2 stigmas. It is found in coastal and upland habitats in West Glamorgan.
