(Linnaeus) Trin.
A common, rhizomatous grass of acidic grasslands, heathland and woodland. It can sometimes form vast swards where the elegant, silvery-shiny spreading panicls of the inflorescences wave gracefully in gentle breezes. The fine leaves have an angular, almost square profile which makes identification of non-flowering specimens a little easier. It is an unbiquitous calcifuge grass in Britain and a reliable indicator of nutrient poor acid grassland. It is found throughout West Glamorgan, but more commonly on the acidic soils of the South Wales Coalfield.
