Very similar to Hazel (Coryllus avellana) and differs from it mainly by the ovoid nuts which are quite large (>2cm) and the bracts around the nut also large and exceeding the nut in length. It is grown for its nuts which are called Kentish Cobs but it also planted, especially the form with dark, purplish leaves (shown in photo), which is known as Coryllus maximima purpurea. It is rarely found naturalised in West Glamorgan.
