Conyza bonariensis Argentine Fleabane

Amrhydlwyd yr Ariannin

(Linnaeus) Cronquist

A weedy species that is native to South America, first recorded in Britain in 1909 where it was introduced as a wool alien and became naturalised in the south of England in the 1990s. It has increased its range in Britain in the last few decades but it is still very uncommon in West Glamorgan. It differs from the similar but much more common Conyza floribunda in its very hairy phyllaries. It is less easy to distinguish from Conyza sumatrensis which has a more pyramid-shaped inflorescence and a yellowish pappus. It often has conspicuous red-tipped phyllaries, which is a good field character for this species.

Neophyte

This species has been renamed Erigeron bonariensis.
