Cirsium vulgare Spear Thistle

March Ysgall

(Savi) Ten.

A common, biennial thistle of waysides, verges and rufderal habitats. The conspicuous purple, solitary heads are visited by lots of pollinators. It is very widespread and common throughout West Glamorgan and one of our most familiar thistles. Plants often occur as solitary individuals and it doesn't exhibit rhizomatous growth, so it doesn't form dense clonal stands like Creeping Thistle (Cirsium arvense).
