Carum verticillatum Whorled Caraway

Carwas Troellog

(Linnaeus) Koch

Carum verticillatumĀ (Trocdaris verticillata), Whorled Caraway, is a slender, white-flowered umbellifer. The long narrow leaves with thread-like leaflets resemble those of Yarrow (Achillea millefolium). It belongs to the Oceanic Southern-temperate element of the British flora and it has a markedly western distribition in Britain and Ireland. Whorled Caraway is a calcifuge species of wet meadows, rushy pastures and marshy grasslands and it is widespread in the southern half of Wales where it is a good indicator of 'rhos pasture'. It is almost completely absent from East Glamorgan and even in West Glamorgan its distribution is skewed significantly towards the west and north-west andĀ it is largely absent from suitable habitats south of the Vale of Neath.
