Carex panicea Carnation Sedge

Hesg Llwydlas

Linnaeus

A very common and widely distibuted sedge in Britain which is found in all sorts of grassland communities such as hay meadows, flood-plane meadows and marshy grasslands. The leaves taper to a solid, trigonous point and both the upper and lower surfaces of the leaves have a distinctive, glaucous appearance like carnation leaves, hence its common name. It can be confused with Glaucous Sedge (Carex flacca), but the leaves of that species are dull green above and glaucous beneath in mature plants and do not have a trigonous point. The fruiting spikes of Carnation Sedge are almost unmistakble, usually bearing reltively few, swollen utricles. Carnation Sedge is Widespread in West Glamorgan and is a common feature of the Gower Commons grasslands, marshy grasslands and wet peaty habitats throughout the county.
