Carex nigra Common Sedge

Hesg Cyffredin

(Linnaeus) Reichard

Common Sedge is a plant of acidic habitats but with a wide ecological tolerance, occuring in Sphagnum mires, damp heathland and coastal communities such as dune slacks. The black glumes which contrast sharply with the green fruits (utricles) give it a distinctive appearance. It is widespread and common in suitable habitats in West Glamorgan.
